Kuta Beach#01Sunset & surf lessonsKuta

Kuta Beach

Bali's best-known tourist beach: a long, wide stretch of sand facing west, close to Ngurah Rai airport. The waves are fairly gentle for a surf break, so it is a classic place for a first surf lesson, and the sunset draws a crowd every evening.

  • ⏱ 2-3 hours
  • 🚗 in Kuta, close to the airport
  • 🌅 Late afternoon, sunset
Our tipSwim only between the flags where lifeguards are watching - currents here can be strong. Surf instructors and beach vendors will approach you; a polite no is fine. Expect heavy traffic on the roads around sunset.

Legian & Double Six Beach#02Calmer sunset walksLegian

Legian & Double Six Beach

The same long beach as Kuta, a little further north, where the crowd thins out. Legian has a lively street of shops and bars behind it, while the Double Six end near Seminyak feels more relaxed, with space for a long walk, sunbeds and sunset drinks.

  • ⏱ 2 hours
  • 🚗 between Kuta and Seminyak, about 15-25 min from either
  • 🌅 Late afternoon, sunset
Our tipStrong currents and waves are common - look for the lifeguard flags and ask them before swimming. Walking the beach between Legian and Seminyak at low tide is easier than at high tide.

Seminyak Beach & beach clubs#03Beach loungingSeminyak

Seminyak Beach & beach clubs

A wide beach lined with a mix of casual sunbed spots and polished beach clubs with pools, music and sunset views. It is the place to settle in with a drink and watch the sky change, or to walk the sand in the early morning when it is quiet.

  • ⏱ Half day
  • 🚗 in Seminyak
  • 🌅 Afternoon into sunset
Our tipPopular clubs fill up near sunset, especially at weekends, so we can help you plan the timing - we do not rank individual venues. Sea conditions change from day to day; check the flags before swimming.

Petitenget Temple#04Sea templeSeminyak

Petitenget Temple

A Balinese Hindu sea temple on the Seminyak coast, traditionally linked to the 16th-century priest Nirartha. Its carved gateways and the sea beyond make a calm, photogenic stop between the shops and beach clubs, and offerings are brought here regularly.

  • ⏱ 45 min - 1 hour
  • 🚗 in Seminyak, close to the beach
  • 🌅 Late afternoon
Our tipIt is a working temple: wear a sarong and sash (often available to borrow or rent at the entrance), dress modestly and stay out of areas marked for worshippers. During ceremonies visitors may be asked to stay outside - ask before entering.

Seminyak shops, galleries & cafe streets#05Shopping & cafesSeminyak

Seminyak shops, galleries & cafe streets

The streets behind Seminyak Beach hold boutiques, homeware and craft shops, art galleries, bakeries and a wide mix of cafes and restaurants. It is an easy half-day of browsing, with plenty of air-conditioned stops when the heat builds.

  • ⏱ 3-4 hours
  • 🚗 in Seminyak
  • 🌅 Morning, or evening when it cools
Our tipPavements are narrow and busy with scooters, so walk carefully. Prices in small shops are often negotiable, in fixed-price boutiques they are not. Consider shipping larger purchases rather than carrying them.

Waterbom Bali water park#06Family funTuban

Waterbom Bali water park

A garden-style water park in Tuban, between Kuta and the airport, with water slides, pools and a lazy river among tropical plants. A good way to cool off with children or friends on a hot day.

  • ⏱ Half day
  • 🚗 about 10-20 min from Kuta, near the airport
  • 🌅 Weekday, arrive early
Our tipWeekends and school holidays are busiest, so go on a weekday if you can. Slides have age and height limits and some rides close in bad weather - we check what is open for your date.

Bali Bombing Memorial (Ground Zero)#07MemorialLegian, Kuta

Bali Bombing Memorial (Ground Zero)

A quiet monument on Jalan Legian remembering the victims of the 2002 attacks, among them people from Indonesia and many other countries. Their names are inscribed on the memorial, and visitors stop to reflect and leave flowers.

  • ⏱ 20-30 min
  • 🚗 in Legian, about 10 min from Kuta
  • 🌅 Morning
Our tipPlease be quiet and respectful: no loud talking, no posed or joking photos, and no climbing on the monument. The street around it is busy, so allow a short stop rather than a long visit.

Canggu: Echo Beach & Batu Bolong#08Surf & sunsetCanggu

Canggu: Echo Beach & Batu Bolong

Canggu's dark volcanic-sand beaches are the heart of Bali's surf-and-cafe scene. Batu Bolong is popular with learners and longboarders and has a small sea temple on the rocks, while Echo Beach, a little north, has stronger waves, casual seafront eateries and busy sunsets.

  • ⏱ 2-4 hours
  • 🚗 in Canggu, about 30-60 min from Kuta depending on traffic
  • 🌅 Morning for surf, late afternoon for sunset
Our tipCurrents and shore break can be strong - beginners should have a lesson with a qualified instructor and swim only where lifeguards or locals say it is safe. The narrow lanes jam up at sunset, so go early or stay late.

🏞️#09Rice fields & cafesCanggu, Berawa & Pererenan

Berawa & Pererenan rice fields and cafes

Between the Canggu beaches, patches of green rice terraces still sit beside villas, yoga studios and cafes. Pererenan, just north of Canggu, has a quieter beach and a village feel, and a slow coffee or brunch with a field view is part of the local rhythm.

  • ⏱ 2-3 hours
  • 🚗 in Canggu, about 5-15 min from Echo Beach
  • 🌅 Morning, or late afternoon
Our tipThese fields are working farmland: stay on the paths, do not walk into the rice, and ask before flying a drone. Small lanes jam quickly, so walking is often easier at busy hours.
Tanah Lot sea temple#10Iconic sea templeTabanan, west of Canggu

Tanah Lot sea temple

One of Bali's most famous temples, set on a rock just off the shore and shaped by the waves, with cliff paths and more small temples along the coast. It is a working Hindu place of worship and one of the island's busiest sunset spots.

  • ⏱ 2-3 hours
  • 🚗 about 30-45 min from Canggu, longer from Kuta and at peak times
  • 🌅 Late afternoon for sunset, or early morning for fewer people
Our tipAt high tide the path to the rock may be covered by water, and visitors usually cannot enter the inner temple, so you watch from the viewpoints. Wear a sarong where asked, expect crowds near sunset, and allow extra time for traffic.

Practical tips

Getting there

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is right next to Kuta, usually a short ride away; Seminyak and Canggu are further north, and the trip can take anywhere from roughly 30 minutes to well over an hour depending on traffic. Ask your hotel about airport transfers, and leave extra time on the way back to the airport.

Best time

The dry season, roughly April to October, usually brings the clearest skies and best sunsets; the wetter months, roughly November to March, have more showers and rougher seas but are quieter and often cheaper. July-August and the year-end holidays are the busiest. Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence in March or April, closes the airport and keeps everyone indoors for a day - we can tell you the date for your year.

Sea safety & respect

Currents on this coast can be strong. Swim between the flags where lifeguards are on duty, ask them if unsure, and do not swim after drinking. At temples cover shoulders and knees, wear a sarong where asked, and do not step on the small palm-leaf offerings on pavements or in doorways. Dress modestly away from the beach.

Getting around

Traffic is heavy on the roads between Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu, especially around sunset and on weekends, so allow much more time than the distance suggests. Ride-hailing apps and taxis are common, though some areas restrict pickups and your driver may ask you to meet at a nearby point. A car with driver is the easiest way to combine Tanah Lot and several beaches in one day; if you rent a scooter, make sure you have a valid licence, a helmet and insurance cover.
