Entry
Indonesians and ASEAN citizens are visa-free for short stays. Most other nationalities can apply for the official e-visa online (for the main airports and some land borders) or get a visa on arrival (USD cash, passport photo). Check the official e-visa site for the current list.
Culture - take note
Quiet, Buddhist and conservative. Greet with the 'nop' (palms together). Dress modestly, especially in Luang Prabang; women should not touch monks. The dawn alms-giving ceremony is sacred - watch quietly from a distance and do not use flash. Public displays of affection are inappropriate. Relations between foreigners and Lao citizens are regulated by law. Unexploded ordnance remains in rural areas - stay on marked paths.
