🏝️ Timor-Leste

Entry rules, culture notes and emergency numbers.

Entry

Timor-Leste (East Timor) is Indonesia's neighbour and joined ASEAN in October 2025. Most guides say Indonesians can enter without a visa for a stay of up to 30 days, but the official immigration pages describe older arrival rules (an arrival card, proof of funds and a return ticket, and passport validity of at least 6 months, with a visa fee payable in US dollars cash for nationalities that need one). Confirm on the Immigration Service site whether Indonesians need a visa or pay a fee, before you travel. The US dollar is the currency: bring cash, because ATMs and money changers can be scarce, especially at border posts.

Culture and practical - take note

A mostly Catholic country with strong community and church life: dress modestly in churches and villages, greet people politely and ask permission before photographing them or ceremonies. Tetum and Portuguese are official languages; Indonesian is widely understood by older people. Roads outside Dili can be rough and facilities limited - book transport and lodging ahead, and carry water and cash. Dengue and malaria precautions apply. If you cross the land border from Atambua (East Nusa Tenggara), check the border post's opening hours and the rules for vehicles first.

Emergency and help

Ask your hotel for the local emergency numbers and save the contact of the Indonesian Embassy in Dili before you go.

Rules, fees and websites change often. We check these pages regularly (last check: 10 October 2026) but always confirm on the official site before you travel. Satu Koneksi Hotel is not responsible for third-party websites.
