Entry
Indonesians and other ASEAN citizens are visa-free for short visits (check the allowed number of days on the official site). Many other nationalities need an e-visa (available to all nationalities, up to 90 days, single or multiple entry) - apply only on the official site. Vietnam has introduced an online arrival declaration; check the official immigration site for the current requirement before you fly.
Culture - take note
Vietnamese culture values respect for elders and modesty. Dress respectfully at pagodas and temples, and at Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum (no shorts, no hats, silence). Don't touch people's heads or point with your finger. Traffic is intense - cross the road slowly and steadily. Bargaining is normal in markets, with a smile. Avoid public criticism of the government. Tipping is appreciated in tourist areas but not required.
