Money
The currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR). Cards are accepted in hotels, malls and larger restaurants; carry cash for markets, small warungs, taxis and villages. ATMs are everywhere in cities; use ATMs inside banks or malls and cover your PIN. QRIS (QR payment) is widely used by locals - some apps work for visitors. Change money only at banks or licensed money changers (check Bank Indonesia's list) and avoid street changers with 'too good' rates. Tipping is appreciated but not expected: round up, or 5-10% in restaurants if no service charge.
Culture and etiquette in Indonesia
Indonesia is diverse and mostly Muslim, with Hindu Bali and Christian regions. Dress modestly away from the beach, and cover shoulders and knees at temples and mosques (sarongs are lent at Balinese temples). Use your right hand to give, receive and eat. Do not touch people's heads. Public displays of affection are frowned upon. During Ramadan, avoid eating or drinking in public in the daytime in Muslim areas. In Bali, do not step on the small daily offerings (canang) on the pavement, and respect Nyepi (the day of silence, when the whole island - including the airport - shuts down). Drugs are punished extremely severely. Ask before photographing people and ceremonies.
