Worldwide: before any trip

🦘 Australia

Entry rules, culture notes and emergency numbers.

Entry

Almost everyone needs a visa or electronic travel authority before flying. The quick Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is only for certain passports - Indonesian passport holders normally apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) online and must show funds, ties to Indonesia and the purpose of the trip. Check eligibility and the current fee on the Home Affairs site, apply early (processing takes weeks), and never use unofficial agents who promise guaranteed visas.

Culture and rules - take note

Biosecurity is extremely strict: you must declare ALL food, plant material, wood and animal products, and the fines for failing to declare are heavy - when in doubt, declare or leave it at home. Australia is relaxed and informal; be punctual, queue politely and treat service staff as equals. Tipping is optional. Sun and sea safety: use strong sun protection, swim between the red and yellow flags and obey warnings about crocodiles, stingers and rips. Drive on the left. Nicotine vapes need a prescription. Respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and sacred sites (climbing Uluru is banned). Halal food is easy to find in the big cities. Wildfire and cyclone seasons can affect travel - follow official warnings.

Emergency

Triple Zero 000 for police, fire and ambulance (112 also works from a mobile phone).
