Entry
Indonesian citizens normally need a Temporary Resident Visa (visitor visa). Since 26 May 2026 some Indonesians - those who held a Canadian visitor visa in the last 10 years or who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa - may apply for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) instead when flying to or through Canada. Everyone else applies for the visitor visa online with IRCC and gives fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre (Jakarta, Surabaya or Bali). Check the current fees, eligibility and processing times on the official site, apply well ahead, and never pay agents who promise approval.
Culture and safety - take note
Canadians are polite and value queues, apologies and personal space. Tipping is expected: 15-20% in restaurants and for taxis, and taxes are added at the till. English and French are official languages (Quebec uses mainly French). Drive on the right; winter driving needs winter tyres and care. Wildlife: keep your distance from bears and moose and follow park rules; weather in winter can be extremely cold - dress in layers. Cannabis is legal for adults but you must not take it across borders. Healthcare is expensive for visitors - buy travel insurance. If you transit via the USA, check the US rules and visa too. Halal food is common in big cities.
Emergency
911 for police, fire and ambulance.
