Entry
Indonesian passport holders: China has given Indonesia a visa-free TRANSIT of up to 10 days (since June 2025) if you hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country and enter through a designated port. For a normal tourist trip, check with the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia whether you need a visa - rules for visa-free entry change often. Since 20 November 2025 foreign visitors can fill in the arrival card online before they fly (official National Immigration Administration site, the NIA 12367 app, or WeChat/Alipay mini-programs); you can still complete it at the airport if you could not do it in advance. Use only these official channels.
Culture and practical - take note
Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and many other foreign apps are blocked in mainland China - install and set up what you need (maps, translation, payment) BEFORE you go, and ask your operator about roaming. Mobile payment (Alipay, WeChat Pay) is the normal way to pay and now works with foreign cards - link your card in advance and keep some cash. Hotels must register foreign guests with their passport. Avoid political topics (Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang, the government) and do not photograph military or police sites. Be patient in queues and crowds; spitting and loud phone calls are common but not for you to copy. Do not stick chopsticks upright in rice. Tipping is not customary. Tap water is not for drinking. Halal food: look for 'Qingzhen' signs (Lanzhou noodle and Uyghur restaurants).
