Entry

Most sources say Indonesian citizens need a visa for Costa Rica, applied for at a Costa Rican embassy or consulate (allow several weeks), while one site claims visa-free entry - do not rely on that. The visa requirement is reported to be waived for people who hold a valid visa or residence permit for countries such as the United States or Canada - confirm which ones and the conditions with the Costa Rican immigration authority or embassy before you book. Bring a passport valid for 6 months, a return ticket, hotel details and proof of funds. A yellow fever certificate is needed if you arrive from a risk country.

Culture and practical - take note

'Pura vida' (pure life) is the national greeting and attitude - relaxed, polite and friendly. The rainy season runs about May to November, with the driest weather from December to April. National park tickets are limited and must usually be reserved in advance online, and some parks, such as Corcovado, require a licensed guide. Pacific beaches often have strong rip currents - swim where there are lifeguards and obey the flags. Do not leave anything visible in a parked car: theft from rental cars is the most common problem. Use official taxis or apps. Keep a safe distance from wildlife and never feed it. Drug penalties are severe. Tipping is usually included; leave a little extra for good service. Halal food is limited outside San Jose.
