Entry

Sources say Indonesian citizens need an Ethiopian e-Visa for tourism (reported fee about USD 50 plus a small processing charge, stay up to 30 days, issued for arrival at Addis Ababa airport). Apply only on the official e-Visa site - look-alike sites charge more - and confirm the current fee and rules there. Do not plan around a visa on arrival. Bring a passport valid for 6 months and an onward ticket. A yellow fever certificate is needed if you arrive from a risk country. Ask a doctor about malaria prevention.

Culture and safety - take note

Ethiopia has its own calendar (about 7-8 years behind) and many people tell time from sunrise, so confirm whether a time is 'local' or 'international'. Most people are Orthodox Christian or Muslim. At churches such as those in Lalibela, take off your shoes and dress modestly; during fasting days (Wednesdays, Fridays and long fasts) restaurants serve vegan 'fasting' food. Coffee ceremonies are an honour - accept at least a cup. Ask before photographing people, and never photograph government or military sites. Addis Ababa is at about 2,300 m - rest on the first day. Some regions, including parts of the north and the border areas, are affected by conflict - governments advise against travel there, so check Kemlu and other advisories. The Danakil Depression is extremely hot and should only be visited with a licensed operator and the required escorts. Halal food is easy to find. Use the right hand to eat and give.
