🍷 Georgia (Caucasus)

Entry rules, culture notes and emergency numbers.

Entry

Georgia the country (not the US state) lets many nationalities in without a visa and others through an e-Visa. For Indonesian passport holders, travel sites report different things (visa-free for a short stay, or an e-visa) - confirm on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa page and the official e-Visa portal before you book. Typically a passport valid for the stay, an onward ticket and proof of funds are asked for. Do NOT travel to or through the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia - governments advise against it and it can create serious legal problems.

Culture - take note

Georgians are famous for hospitality: a 'supra' feast comes with toasts led by the tamada (toastmaster) - drink slowly and do not refuse the toasts abruptly. Orthodox churches: cover shoulders and knees, women cover their hair with a scarf, men remove hats. Wine is part of the culture; so is respect for elders. Tipping about 10%. Currency is the lari. Mountain roads can be steep and winter closures happen - check conditions. Stray dogs are common. Halal food is limited outside Tbilisi and Batumi - ask ahead. Respect for religion and national symbols is important.

Emergency

112 for police, fire and ambulance.
