🌃 Hong Kong

Entry rules, culture notes and emergency numbers.

Entry

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China with its own immigration rules - entering mainland China needs separate permission. Indonesian passport holders are reported to be able to visit Hong Kong visa-free for a short stay (guides say 30 days), but confirm on the Immigration Department's page. Passport validity: guides differ (1 to 6 months beyond your stay) - plan on at least 6 months. Airlines often ask for a return or onward ticket. Check the Immigration Department site for any pre-arrival registration or arrival form that may apply to your passport.

Culture and rules - take note

Hong Kong is fast, crowded and efficient. Eating or drinking on the MTR is fined, as is littering and spitting; smoking is banned in most indoor and many outdoor public places; e-cigarettes and vapes are banned. Queue properly and stand on the right of escalators. Restaurants usually add a 10% service charge, so extra tipping is optional. Chopsticks: do not stick them upright in rice. Avoid political discussion and protest activity. Cantonese is spoken, but English is common in tourist areas. Muslim visitors: there are mosques (such as the Kowloon Mosque) and halal restaurants. Typhoons (roughly May-November) can close transport - follow the Hong Kong Observatory warnings. An Octopus card pays for transport and many shops.

Emergency

999 for police, fire and ambulance (112 also works from a mobile phone).
