Entry
Visitors are generally given a free 30-day tourist stay on arrival, but you need a confirmed booking at a registered resort, hotel or guesthouse, an onward or return ticket, enough money for your stay and a passport valid for at least 6 months (guides vary - plan for 6). Everyone must also complete the official online traveller declaration (IMUGA) before arrival and departure. Use only the official immigration sites - there are many copycats.
Culture and rules - take note
The Maldives is a fully Islamic country. Alcohol is only available on resort islands and licensed boats - not on local islands - and importing alcohol, pork, idols or anything contrary to Islam is forbidden. Bikinis are fine on resort islands and designated tourist beaches, but on local islands dress modestly in the village and swim in the marked 'bikini beach' area. Friday is the day of prayer; during Ramadan, avoid eating or drinking in public on local islands. Protect the reef: do not touch or stand on coral, and do not take shells, coral or sand. Boat and seaplane transfers follow fixed daylight schedules, so allow buffer time. A green tax is charged per person per night - ask your resort. Sun is strong: use reef-safe sunscreen.
