🐎 Mongolia

Entry rules, culture notes and emergency numbers.

Entry

Sources disagree on whether Indonesians need an e-visa or can enter visa-free for a short stay, so check the official Mongolian e-Visa system and the Mongolian embassy in Jakarta before you book - and apply early if a visa is needed (processing takes days). Typical requirements: a passport valid for 6 months, an onward ticket and proof of accommodation. Use only the official sites.

Culture and practical - take note

Mongolia is vast, nomadic and rugged. In a ger (yurt): wait to be invited in, do not step on the threshold, do not lean on the central support poles, and accept food and drink with your right hand (touch the cup even if you do not drink). Do not point your feet at the stove or altar. Sacred stone piles (ovoo) are walked around clockwise three times. Chinggis Khaan is a national hero - show respect. Roads outside Ulaanbaatar are often unpaved: hire a driver or guide and do not travel alone off-road. Winters are extremely cold (-30 C and below); summers are short. Cash (tugrik) is needed outside the capital. Halal food is limited except in the Muslim Kazakh west - ask ahead. Naadam (July) is the main festival.

Emergency

Police 102. Fire 101. Ambulance 103.
