Entry
Namibia changed its visa rules in 2025 and sources disagree: older guides say Indonesians are visa-free, while newer ones report that most visitors now need a visa or e-Visa (reported fee about NAD 1,600) applied for on the government portal in advance. Plan on needing one and confirm with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHAISS) or a Namibian embassy before you book. Use only the official site - the portal may first show a 'confirm you are human' check, and copycat sites exist. Bring a passport valid for 6 months with several blank pages, a return ticket and hotel details.
Top cities and places to visit
Where most visitors go, and the places travellers find most attractive - based on tourism rankings and official tourism sites (checked October 2026).
Compact capital and main gateway, known for German colonial buildings such as Christuskirche, craft markets and grilled-meat restaurants.
Towering red dunes and white clay pans in the Namib Desert, with sunrise climbs of Dune 45 and Deadvlei's dead trees.
Wildlife park around a vast salt pan, where elephants, rhinos, lions and zebras gather at waterholes.
Seaside town with German-era architecture, known for sandboarding, quad biking in the dunes, dolphin cruises and seafood.
Vast canyon in the far south with sweeping viewpoints and a challenging multi-day hiking trail in the cooler months.
Rugged red landscapes with UNESCO-listed ancient rock engravings and desert-adapted elephants.
Travel and culture - take note
Namibia is vast and thinly populated. Distances are long, many roads are gravel, fuel stops can be 200 km apart and mobile signal is patchy - carry spare tyres, water and fuel, do not drive at night (animals on the road), and tell someone your route. Drive on the left. Etosha and other parks have strict rules: stay in your vehicle, keep to the speed limits and gate times. The desert is very hot by day and cold at night. Ask before photographing people, especially in Himba and Herero communities, and expect to pay for a village visit. Malaria is a risk in the north - ask a doctor. Tip about 10% in restaurants. Halal food is limited outside Windhoek.
Emergency
