🏔️ Nepal

Entry rules, culture notes and emergency numbers.

Entry

Travel guides say Indonesian citizens can get a tourist visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport or apply online in advance, but none of them is an official source, so confirm the current fee, allowed stay and passport rules on the Nepal immigration site or with the Nepali embassy before you book. Bring a passport valid for at least 6 months, passport photos, a return ticket and cash for the fee. Travel insurance that covers trekking and helicopter rescue is strongly advised.

Culture and trekking - take note

Nepal is mostly Hindu and Buddhist. Take off your shoes at temples and homes, dress modestly, and avoid leather items inside some temples. Walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels. Do not touch people's heads, use your right hand to give and receive, and greet with 'Namaste' (palms together). Some Hindu temples, such as Pashupatinath, are closed to non-Hindus in the inner area. Ask before photographing people and religious ceremonies. For trekking, permits are required in many areas - arrange them through a registered agency, hire a licensed guide, go in the dry seasons (spring and autumn), and climb slowly to avoid altitude sickness. Drink only bottled or treated water. Halal food is limited outside Kathmandu - ask ahead.

Emergency

Police 100. Fire 101. Ambulance 102. (Confirm with your hotel or guide on arrival.)
