🥝 New Zealand

Entry rules, culture notes and emergency numbers.

Entry

Indonesian citizens need a Visitor visa before travelling; the quick NZeTA is for visa-waiver nationalities and does not replace a visa for you. Apply online with Immigration New Zealand; check the current fee and processing time on its site (guides give different figures). Most visitors also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Heritage Levy - check the amount on the official site. Show funds, onward travel and a passport valid beyond your stay. Use only the official immigration.govt.nz site.

Culture and safety - take note

Biosecurity is extremely strict: declare ALL food, plant and animal items, and clean hiking boots and camping gear - fines are on the spot. Respect Māori culture: do not sit on tables, ask before entering a marae, and treat sacred (tapu) sites with care. Kiwis are relaxed; tipping is optional. Drive on the left; roads are narrow and winding - allow extra time. Outdoor safety matters: weather changes fast in the mountains, so register trip plans, carry layers, and use sunscreen (UV is strong). Sandflies bite at lakes and fiords - bring repellent. Earthquakes occur - know the 'drop, cover, hold' drill. Halal food is available in the big cities.

Emergency

111 for police, fire and ambulance.
