❄️ Russia

Entry rules, culture notes and emergency numbers.

READ FIRST - safety and practical warning

Many governments currently advise against all or non-essential travel to Russia, especially near the border regions with Ukraine. Flights are limited and airports can close at short notice; travel insurance policies often exclude Russia - ask your insurer; and foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard cards generally do not work there (bring cash and check which cards are accepted). Check the Indonesian Foreign Ministry (Kemlu) advice and your own government's advice just before you book, and keep the contact of the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow.

Entry

Indonesian citizens need a visa for tourism. The official electronic visa (e-Visa) is applied for online on the Russian foreign ministry's consular portal - use only that site, check the current rules (stay length, entry points, passport validity) and apply well ahead. Foreigners must be registered (hotels do this for you) - keep the slip, and carry your passport.

Culture and laws - take note

Russians can seem reserved at first but are warm with guests: take off shoes at homes, bring a small gift, and bring an ODD number of flowers (even numbers are for funerals). Do not photograph military, airport or government sites, and avoid political discussion and public protest - laws are strict. Drones need permission. Winters are extremely cold: dress in layers. Metro stations are works of art and the easiest way around big cities. Tipping about 10%. Halal food exists in big cities and in Muslim regions such as Tatarstan.

Emergency

112 for all emergencies. Police 102. Ambulance 103. Fire 101.
