Entry
Sources disagree on whether Indonesian citizens enter South Africa visa-free for a short tourist stay or need an advance electronic authorisation, so confirm the current rule with the Department of Home Affairs or the South African embassy in Jakarta before you book - airlines may refuse boarding if your papers are wrong. Bring a passport valid beyond your stay (6 months is the safe choice) with enough blank pages, a return ticket and proof of accommodation. A yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a risk country.
Safety and culture - take note
Crime is the main risk. Do not walk alone at night or in quiet areas, do not display phones, cameras or jewellery, use ride-hailing apps or hotel transport instead of walking or hailing taxis, keep car doors locked and valuables out of sight, and use hotel safes. Follow your guide's advice in townships and city centres. On safari stay inside the vehicle and never approach wildlife; some game areas (such as the northeast near Kruger) are in a malaria zone - ask a doctor about prevention. Power cuts (load-shedding) happen. Drive on the left. Tip about 10-15% in restaurants. South Africa is very diverse and proud of it: be respectful about race and history. Halal food is easy to find in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Cape Town's Table Mountain cable car closes in strong wind, so keep some flexibility.
