Entry
Tourists need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): apply online before you fly on the official ETA site (approval usually takes 1-3 days). Whether Indonesians pay a fee or get it free has changed, and sources disagree - the site shows the current fee. Typical requirements: passport valid at least 6 months, a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation and enough funds. Pay only on the official site: a payment to any other website is not valid for your ETA.
Culture - take note
Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities live side by side. Dress modestly and cover shoulders and knees at temples; take off shoes AND hats, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue or take selfies with one - it can lead to arrest and deportation. Tattoos or clothing showing Buddha images can also cause trouble. On Poya days (full moon) alcohol sales stop and some places close. Use your right hand to give and receive. Do not take antiques, coral, shells or wildlife out of the country. Watch elephant 'attractions' - choose ethical, observation-only places. Drink bottled water. Book popular trains early. Monsoon seasons differ by coast (south-west roughly May-September, north-east roughly October-January). Halal food is easy to find.
