🏮 Taiwan

Entry rules, culture notes and emergency numbers.

Entry

Rules for Indonesians are special: instead of a normal visa, eligible Indonesian passport holders can apply online for a Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC) - for example those who hold a Japan visa-waiver registration or certain visas or residence permits from countries such as the US, UK, Japan, Korea, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Schengen countries. Otherwise a visa from the Taiwan representative office in Jakarta is needed. Typical TAC conditions: passport valid at least 6 months, an onward or return ticket, and no record of working or violations in Taiwan. Print the approved certificate and show it at the border. The rules and the eligible list change - confirm on the Bureau of Consular Affairs and National Immigration Agency pages before you book. Taiwan also has an online arrival card (TWAC) for some entries - use only the official immigration site.

Culture and rules - take note

Taiwan is polite, safe and orderly. No eating or drinking on the MRT (fined) - and durian is banned on public transport. Stand on the right of escalators and queue. Plugs are type A/B at 110 V, different from Indonesia (230 V) - bring an adapter and check that your chargers accept 110 V. In older buildings, toilet paper may need to go in the bin, not the toilet - follow the signs. Take off shoes in homes and some guesthouses. Tipping is not customary. Temples: dress modestly, do not touch offerings or point at statues, and walk in through the right door and out through the left. E-cigarettes and vapes are banned. Avoid sensitive political comparisons between Taiwan and mainland China. Typhoons (roughly July-October) and earthquakes occur - follow the Central Weather Administration. Halal food is available in Taipei, including near the Taipei Grand Mosque.

Emergency
