Entry

Sources disagree: some say Indonesians can visit Tajikistan visa-free for up to about 30 days, others say an e-Visa is needed (reported fee about USD 50). Check the official e-Visa site or the Tajik embassy before you book. If you plan to visit the Pamir region (GBAO) you also need a special permit, which can be added through the e-Visa system - apply for it even if you are otherwise visa-free. Bring a passport valid for 6 months and a return ticket.

Culture and travel - take note

Tajikistan is mostly Muslim and very hospitable: dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), take your shoes off at homes and be ready for endless tea and bread - never put bread upside down. The Pamir Highway is spectacular but remote: roads are rough, altitude can cause sickness, fuel and cash machines are scarce and phone signal is patchy - go with a reputable driver or operator and carry enough cash, water and warm clothes. Areas near the Afghan border can be unsafe - governments advise caution, so check Kemlu and other advisories. Do not photograph military or government sites, bridges or border posts. Drink only bottled water. Halal food is common.
