Culture and practical - take note
Ugandans are friendly and formal: always greet first and ask how the person is. Dress modestly in towns (shoulders and knees covered). Plastic carrier bags are banned. Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking needs a permit from the wildlife authority that is expensive and limited - book early through an official source or reputable operator, keep the required distance and do not trek if you are ill. On safari follow your guide. Ask before photographing people and never photograph government, police or military sites. Laws on same-sex relations are very strict - governments warn travellers. Use ride-hailing apps in Kampala and avoid walking at night. Tipping guides and drivers is normal. Halal food is available in Kampala.
