Baiturrahman Grand Mosque#01Grand mosqueCity centre

Baiturrahman Grand Mosque

The symbol of Aceh: a white mosque with black domes and tall minarets set around a wide courtyard. It stood through the 2004 tsunami and remains the city's spiritual heart.

  • โฑ 1 hour
  • ๐Ÿš— in the city centre
  • ๐ŸŒ… Morning or late afternoon
Our tipDress modestly: long loose clothes and, for women, a scarf. Non-Muslim visitors are usually welcome in the grounds but the prayer hall may be closed to them, so ask staff. Avoid prayer times.

๐Ÿž๏ธ#02Memorial museumCity centre

Aceh Tsunami Museum

Opened in 2009 to remember the 26 December 2004 earthquake and tsunami. A curved building with dark corridors, photos, a memorial hall and stories of the survivors and the rebuilding.

  • โฑ 1.5-2 hours
  • ๐Ÿš— in the city centre
  • ๐ŸŒ… Morning
Our tipIt is a place of mourning for many local families: speak softly and dress respectfully. Opening days, hours and any fee change, so check the official source before you go.
PLTD Apung 1 power ship#03Tsunami memorialPunge Blang Cut

PLTD Apung 1 power ship

A huge power-generating ship that the tsunami carried several kilometres inland and left among houses. Today it is a memorial park where visitors can climb up for a view over the neighbourhood.

  • โฑ 1 hour
  • ๐Ÿš— about 10-15 min from the centre
  • ๐ŸŒ… Morning or late afternoon
Our tipTreat it as a memorial: quiet voices, no jokes or posing. Several mass-grave memorials around the city are also places of mourning - visit with respect and follow local advice.

Gunongan & Kerkhof Peucut#04Old AcehCity centre

Gunongan & Kerkhof Peucut

Gunongan is a small white tower from the Aceh Sultanate's pleasure garden, linked to a love story of a sultan and a homesick princess. Kerkhof Peucut is a large Dutch war cemetery from the Aceh War.

  • โฑ 1.5 hours
  • ๐Ÿš— both in the city centre
  • ๐ŸŒ… Morning
Our tipBoth are quiet heritage sites, best with a local guide who knows the stories. The cemetery is a burial ground, so keep a respectful manner and do not step on graves.

Ulee Lheue seafront & ferry port#05SeafrontUlee Lheue

Ulee Lheue seafront & ferry port

The harbour district on Banda Aceh's north coast, one of the areas hit hardest in 2004. Today it has a seafront promenade, seafood stalls, tsunami escape buildings and the ferries to Weh Island.

  • โฑ 1-2 hours
  • ๐Ÿš— about 15 min from the centre
  • ๐ŸŒ… Late afternoon
Our tipSome of the escape buildings and memorials can be visited - treat them with respect. Leave time before a ferry departure, as timetables change and boarding takes a while.

Lampuuk & Lhoknga beaches#06BeachAceh Besar

Lampuuk & Lhoknga beaches

Long white-sand beaches backed by green hills and palm trees on the coast west of Banda Aceh. Popular for sunset, beach walks and beginner-friendly surf, with simple seafood warungs.

  • โฑ Half day
  • ๐Ÿš— about 25-35 min from the centre
  • ๐ŸŒ… Late afternoon, sunset
Our tipSwim only where locals do and watch for currents; there are few lifeguards. Wear modest swimwear or cover-up clothing, as local rules apply on the beach too.

๐Ÿž๏ธ#08Western tipSabang, Weh Island

Km 0 Monument & Weh Island sights

The Kilometre Zero monument marks the western starting point of Indonesia. Combine it with the island's coast roads, hot springs near Jaboi, and the Pria Laot area near the port.

  • โฑ Half day
  • ๐Ÿš— on Weh Island, ferry plus road
  • ๐ŸŒ… Late afternoon, sunset
Our tipHire a car or motorbike only if you are experienced and have a licence; roads are winding. Start early so you reach the monument before sunset and are back before dark.
Takengon & Lake Laut Tawar#09HighlandsGayo highlands

Takengon & Lake Laut Tawar

A cool highland town beside a big lake, ringed by Gayo arabica coffee farms. Visit a plantation, see the lake from a hilltop viewpoint and taste fish from the lakeside.

  • โฑ 2 days minimum
  • ๐Ÿš— a long drive, about 7-8 hrs from Banda Aceh
  • ๐ŸŒ… Morning, dry months
Our tipThe mountain road is winding, so plan an overnight stay rather than a day trip and avoid driving after dark. A private car with an experienced driver is the safest choice.

๐Ÿž๏ธ#10Coffee & foodBanda Aceh

Aceh coffee houses & mie Aceh

Warung kopi are the social heart of Aceh: strong robusta filtered through cloth, sipped in long conversations, as in the Ulee Kareng coffee district. Follow it with spicy, curry-like mie Aceh.

  • โฑ A few hours
  • ๐Ÿš— across Banda Aceh
  • ๐ŸŒ… Morning coffee, evening noodles
Our tipShops often close briefly for prayer times and on Friday midday. Food is generally halal, but ask if certification matters. We can suggest well-known places for your area.

Practical tips

Getting there

Fly to Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport near Banda Aceh. For Sabang and Weh Island, ferries leave from Ulee Lheue port to Balohan; the fast ferry takes under an hour and the slower car ferry longer. Check timetables for your date.

Best time

The drier months are generally best for the coast and the islands, but the weather can change. Sea conditions around Weh vary through the year, so we check them. Ramadan changes opening hours and meal times.

Respect & dress

Aceh applies local Islamic (Sharia) bylaws, and visitors, including non-Muslims, are expected to follow local rules. Dress modestly in public: loose, long clothes with covered shoulders and knees; non-Muslim women are usually not required to wear a headscarf but should carry one for mosques. Avoid alcohol, public affection and being alone with someone of the opposite sex who is not family. Carry ID. Rules and enforcement can change, so ask us or your hotel.

Getting around

Banda Aceh sights are a short drive apart: use ride-hailing, a taxi or a car with driver. Lampuuk, Weh Island and Takengon are best with a car and driver. Takengon is a long mountain drive of about 7-8 hours from Banda Aceh.

Opening hours, tickets, access and rules change (for example visitor quotas, volcano or sea conditions and closures) - we check them for your dates. Photos: Wikimedia Commons, credited on each picture; map: OpenStreetMap. Last checked 10 October 2026.
