A peninsula on Samosir with most of the island's guesthouses, cafes and lakeside gardens. Swim, kayak, rent a bicycle or scooter, and watch the sun set over the water.
Near the ferry landing stand the stone sarcophagi of the Sidabutar kings, whose clan is counted among the first settlers of Samosir. Stalls nearby sell ulos cloth and carvings.
In a walled village, stone chairs and a table sit under a large old tree, where village elders met some 300 years ago to judge crimes. A guide explains the village and its customs.
At the northern tip of Samosir, a restored Batak royal house is now a museum of carved wood, textiles and old objects, set among traditional buildings by the lake.
A thin waterfall of about 120 metres that plunges into a green gorge at the northern end of Lake Toba. Viewpoints at the top look over the lake, and a steep path leads down.
Berastagi is a cool highland town known for its fruit and vegetable market. Nearby Mount Sibayak is an easy-to-moderate volcano hike to a steaming crater, followed by a soak in hot springs.
A riverside village at the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, where guided walks through the rainforest look for semi-wild Sumatran orangutans, along with monkeys and tropical birds.
Istana Maimun is the yellow palace of the Deli Sultanate, mixing Malay, Moorish and European styles. Close by, the Al Mashun Great Mosque has grand domes and decorated arches.
The grand home of Tjong A Fie, a Chinese-Indonesian merchant of old Medan, now a museum. Chinese, Malay and European touches show the mix of cultures that built the city.

Fly to Kualanamu Airport (KNO), about 40 km from Medan city centre; an airport train runs to the city in about 45 minutes. Parapat is roughly 4-5 hours by road, Berastagi about 2-3 hours. Ferries cross from Parapat or Ajibata to Samosir.
The drier months are usually the most comfortable for lake days and hikes, but rain can come in any month, so plan outdoor visits for the morning. The lake and highlands are cool - bring a light jacket; Medan is hot and humid.
Around the lake most Toba Batak are Christian and pork is common on menus; Muslim travellers should look for halal-marked places, which are easy to find in Medan and Parapat. Cover shoulders and knees at tombs and mosques, and ask before photographing people.
On Samosir, hire a car with driver or a scooter (with a helmet) - roads are narrow and hilly. Between Medan, Berastagi and Bukit Lawang a car with driver is easiest. In Medan use ride-hailing apps, as traffic is heavy. Wear a life jacket on every boat.
