Cross the grey Sea of Sand, pass the Hindu temple of the Tengger people and climb a stairway to the rim of Bromo's steaming crater.
Rolling green hills at the foot of Bromo, nicknamed Teletubbies Hill, usually included in jeep tours. Lush in the wetter months and golden in the dry season.
A tall waterfall inside a steep, round canyon: you walk along a stream and under curtains of falling water into a hidden amphitheatre of rock. Legend links it to the Majapahit minister Gajah Mada.
A wide curtain of falls dropping into a green canyon beneath the Semeru volcano, often called the 'Niagara of Java'. A viewpoint above, and a steep trail down, give two ways to see it.
Riverside homes painted in bright colours and linked by a glass-floored footbridge to the neighbouring 3D-mural village, Kampung Tridi. A lively, photo-friendly stop in the middle of Malang.
A forest-edge waterfall in the cool hills between Malang and Batu, with a short easy walk, a park with family activities, and nearby farms and coffee stops.
Cool, green Batu is Java's family playground, with the Jatim Park attractions, the vintage-vehicle Museum Angkut, fruit farms and evening lights at the night market-style parks.
Dutch-era boulevards, the Kayutangan Heritage street, the Tugu monument and tree-lined Ijen Boulevard make Malang an easy city to stroll, with bakeries, coffee and local bakso.

Most visitors fly to Juanda Airport (Surabaya) and drive 2-3 hours to Malang; Malang also has its own small airport and a train station, and Bromo is reached from Malang, Probolinggo or Pasuruan.
The dry season (roughly April to October) usually gives the clearest Bromo sunrises, but it is cold - near freezing at times. The rainy season is greener but cloudier and waterfall trails are riskier.
The Tengger people around Bromo are Hindu and the mountain is sacred to them; keep respectful near temples and ceremonies. Elsewhere the region is mostly Muslim, with halal food and mosques easy to find. Dress warmly and modestly.
Bromo's sand sea is crossed by 4x4 jeeps from the village - your hotel or planner can arrange this. Between Malang, Batu and the waterfalls, a car with driver is easiest; in town use ride-hailing apps.
Opening hours, tickets, access and rules change (for example visitor quotas, volcano or sea conditions and closures) - we check them for your dates. Photos: Wikimedia Commons, credited on each picture; map: OpenStreetMap. Last checked 10 October 2026.
