Sorong, the gateway
The port city where flights land and boats leave for the islands. Most visitors only pass through to stock up, but Doom Island nearby has old Dutch-era buildings.
Green limestone islets in turquoise lagoons, villages on stilts and some of the richest reefs on Earth - remote, costly and worth it. Here is how to plan Raja Ampat via Sorong, with a map and a free trip planner on WhatsApp.

The small capital of Raja Ampat on Waigeo island, with the marine park office, a market, shops, a hospital and a port where island boats depart.
A short climb up wooden steps ends at the classic Raja Ampat view: green limestone islets scattered across a blue lagoon. Star Lagoon is a quick boat hop away.
The postcard image of Raja Ampat: a maze of mushroom-shaped limestone islets and turquoise water, seen from a steep viewpoint climb and best explored by boat.
The southern island group of karst islets, hidden lagoons, caves and some of the best-protected reefs in Raja Ampat, reached by long boat transfers.
A tiny island village with homestays, a long jetty and clear shallow water where soft corals and fish gather under the pier.
The heart of Raja Ampat diving: reefs around Kri and Mansuar teem with fish, with turtles, reef sharks, and manta rays at cleaning stations. Jetties also suit snorkelling.
A reef wall that drops from a shallow plateau of hard corals, also a good snorkelling spot beside small islands and a village homestay.
A white sandbank that rises out of the sea at low tide, with shallow turquoise water around it for a swim, snorkel and photos.
A sheltered bay of karst islets and quiet channels near Waigeo, with Batu Pensil, a slim rock pillar standing alone in the water.

Fly to Sorong (Domine Eduard Osok Airport, SOQ), about 8 km from the city. From Sorong harbour a fast ferry takes about 2 hours to Waisai, then a second boat reaches your island or resort. Raja Ampat is remote: boats and flights are needed, costs add up, and weather can change plans.
October to April usually has the calmest seas and best visibility, so it is the best window for Wayag and Misool. June to August is windier and rougher. A Raja Ampat marine park entry tag is required for every visitor - we explain how to get it.
Island villages are small, mostly Christian communities and Sunday is a day of rest. Dress modestly on land, ask before photographing people, and never touch coral, feed fish or leave rubbish. Muslim travellers: Sorong has mosques and halal food, but island meals are mostly fish and rice, so tell us your needs early.
Everything between islands is by boat, usually a chartered speedboat or one arranged by your homestay, resort or liveaboard. There is no daily join-tour system everywhere, so book ahead. Medical care outside Sorong and Waisai is limited, so carry insurance and your own medication.
Opening hours, tickets, access and rules change (for example visitor quotas, volcano or sea conditions and closures) - we check them for your dates. Photos: Wikimedia Commons, credited on each picture; map: OpenStreetMap. Last checked 10 October 2026.
