Lawang Sewu
The Dutch-era headquarters of the railway company, finished in 1907 and nicknamed 'Thousand Doors' for its endless doorways. Stained-glass windows, long corridors and a basement make it the city's best-known landmark.
A Dutch-era railway palace of a thousand doors, a Chinese temple for an admiral, steam trains, cool hill temples and a boat to the islands - Semarang is Central Java's port city with a lot more to see than most visitors expect. Plan it with a map and a free trip planner on WhatsApp.

A walkable quarter of Dutch offices and warehouses that once ran the port trade. Its landmark is Gereja Blenduk, a church from 1753 with a copper dome, now ringed by cafes, murals and small museums.
A large temple complex honouring Admiral Zheng He (Cheng Ho), the Chinese Muslim explorer who, by local tradition, landed here in the early 1400s. Red-and-gold halls surround an old cave shrine.
A modern landmark mosque opened in 2006, blending Javanese, Middle Eastern and classical styles. Six huge electric umbrellas inspired by Medina's mosque open over the courtyard, and a 99 m tower has a viewing deck.
A museum in the old Willem I station of 1873, filled with preserved Dutch-era steam locomotives. A historic mountain rack line climbs from here to Bedono, and special steam trips run along it.
Groups of small Hindu temples from roughly the 8th-9th century, scattered across the cool slopes of Mount Ungaran at about 1,200 m, with sulphur hot springs and wide green views.
A highland leisure park at about 1,200 m on the slope of Mount Ungaran, with cool air, forest views, a natural pool, a suspension bridge and activities such as flying fox for families and friends.
A marine national park of small islands in the Java Sea, with white sand, clear water, coral for snorkelling and quiet villages. It is a separate boat trip, not a day out from Semarang.
A high volcanic plateau at around 2,000 m with some of Java's oldest Hindu temples (the Arjuna complex), steaming craters, a colourful sulphur lake and sunrise views from Sikunir hill.
Taste lunpia, the local spring roll that blends Chinese and Javanese cooking, and tahu gimbal, fried tofu and shrimp fritters in peanut sauce, around the Tay Kak Sie temple in Chinatown.

Ahmad Yani International Airport (SRG) is close to the centre, about 15-30 minutes by car. Trains from Jakarta (roughly 5-6 hours) and Surabaya arrive at Tawang or Poncol stations, and the Trans-Java toll road links Semarang with Solo and Yogyakarta, each roughly 2.5-3.5 hours away by road.
The dry season, roughly April to October, is best for the highlands, Dieng and the Karimunjawa boats. Semarang itself is hot and humid all year, so plan outdoor sights for the morning or late afternoon; the hills near Bandungan and Dieng are much cooler.
Cover shoulders and knees at mosques and temples, keep quiet near altars, and ask before photographing people at prayer. Most local food is halal and prayer rooms are easy to find at attractions and malls, but some Chinese-run eateries serve pork, so ask first.
In the city use ride-hailing apps or taxis; Kota Lama is best explored on foot. The highlands, Ambarawa, Dieng and the Jepara port for Karimunjawa are spread out, so a car with driver is the easiest way to combine them.
