A deep green canyon some 15 km long runs beside the city, best seen from Taman Panorama. Close by, Lubang Jepang is a network of tunnels dug by forced labour during the Japanese occupation.
A deep lake that fills an ancient volcanic caldera, reached by the famous 44 hairpin bends of Kelok 44. Quiet villages, rice fields and viewpoints ring the water.
A grand replica of the Minangkabau royal palace, with sweeping horn-shaped roofs and carved wooden walls. Inside, displays show traditional costume, ceremonies and the Minangkabau way of life.
Sheer sandstone cliffs rise above rice fields in this nature reserve, with waterfalls dropping down the rock walls. A peaceful place for gentle walks, cycling and simple homestays.
A bay of green islands, mangroves and clear water south of Padang, often nicknamed West Sumatra's Raja Ampat. Hire a boat to hop between islands, snorkel and pass fishing villages.
A curving flyover opened in 2013 that winds through forested hills on the main road between West Sumatra and Riau. The roadside viewpoint is a favourite photo stop.
A 156-metre bridge over the Batang Arau river links Padang's old harbour quarter with Gunung Padang hill and is named after a classic Minangkabau novel. Lights and riverside snacks come out in the evening.
A beach south of Padang with gentle waves and views of the hills, tied to the Malin Kundang legend of the son turned to stone. Small boats cross to the islands just offshore.
Minangkabau cooking is a reason in itself to come: slow-cooked beef rendang, rich gulai curries and the nasi Padang feast, where many small dishes are set out on your table at once.

Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) lies north of Padang, about 40-60 minutes from the city by road, and an airport train also runs - check the schedule. Bukittinggi is roughly 2-2.5 hours from Padang by car; heavy rain can cause landslides on the highway, so allow extra time.
The drier months, roughly June to September, suit the highlands, Harau and the coast best. Rain can fall in any month, often in the afternoon in the highlands, and it is heavier towards the end of the year.
West Sumatra is strongly Muslim and proud of its Minangkabau customs. Dress modestly away from the beach, cover shoulders and knees at mosques and palaces, and use your right hand to eat and to give. Halal food is everywhere and mosques are easy to find; pork and alcohol are hard to find.
Sights are spread across the highlands and coast, so a car with driver is the easiest way to combine them. In towns use ride-hailing apps or taxis; in Bukittinggi, agree the price first for a bendi horse cart. The Mentawai Islands need a boat from Padang and extra days. Gunung Marapi near Bukittinggi is an active volcano, so check official status before any hike.
