Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is west of the city - allow about 1-1.5 hours by road, or take the airport train. Trains from Jakarta and Surabaya also arrive in the city centre.
The dry season (roughly April to October) is best for temples, sunrises and caves. In the rainy season, plan outdoor visits for the morning.
Cover shoulders and knees at the Kraton, temples and mosques; a sarong is sometimes provided. Use your right hand to give and receive, and ask before photographing people.
